Engineer Aurel Persu is known as being the first Romanian who built the first aerodynamic car in the world having the wheels fixed in the body. Until then, the wheels were positioned on the exterior. He came to the conclusion that the perfect car should have the shape of a raindrop, his invention being named “The raindrop car”.
Aurel Persu attended the Higher Technical School in Berlin – Charlottenburg, completing his studies as valedictorian. In Germany, he received an important medal from the Ministry of Public Instruction for an innovative study on spacecraft.
In 1924, he manages to patent, in Germany, the first car with an aerodynamic shape and other states recognising his invention at a later stage. Eng. Persu’s car was behaving excelent having a perfect balance and being able to take tight corners even at 60km/h. General Motor and Ford have expressed their interest in buying the patent but Aurel Persu refused because the owners of these companies where not going to produce and sell the car.
He has been Ioana Cantacuzino’s second husband being married for a short period of time. Being a friend of the family, he was involved as an engineer in the activity of the “Mircea Cantacuzino” School of Aviation.
Aurel Persu has lectured at the Polytechnic School, now Polytechnic University of Bucharest and served as CEO at the IAR aircraft Factory in Brasov. In 1950, he retired but continued his work at the Institute of Technical Documentation in Bucharest. He died in 1977 in Bucharest.
